Asynchronous Development

I recently saw this video and wanted to share.   Asynchronous development, in my opinion, goes hand in hand with being gifted.   For as long as I can remember, B has been well ahead of the game intellectually, has a depth of emotion that is beyond her years, but social and emotional maturity – not so much.   I know as a parent it’s hard to understand, when one minute she acts years older, and the next minute acts years younger.   So if I have trouble, I certainly understand how others do.  It has never helped her situation that she’s extremely tall and looks older than her age, thus people expect more maturity from her.     Anyways, this is a nice illustration of asynchronous development in gifted kids…

Wow! This post almost made me cry! Word for word, your daughter and mine are exactly alike. My daughter is four. She excels at everything she does, she’s been reading since she was 16 months old and way beyond her peers when it comes to milestones. Except, she is emotionally and socially, less so…..She is also extremely tall for her age. Most people expect so much more of her. Your post made me well up with tears. Finally, someone else who understands!

  2. I found out about asynchronous development 2 yrs ago when I was at wits end (that happens a lot) trying to figure out my girl. She was tested as gifted in school but nobody tells you anything else associated with it. When I searched on the internet for why my child was so hypersensitive & over reactive, all this stuff popped up about gifted kids and asynchronous dev. It was like a lightbulb went off. ‘Tho I’m still trying to understand her.
